Unveiled at this week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the US, the Seagate Digital Audio Video Experience (DAVE) Technology Platform allows consumers to download, store and play back photos, videos, music and business documents on Sanyo, PortoMedia and HarmanBecker devices in the US.
The device is compatible with industry standard protocols including USB, USB On The Go, Bluetooth 2.0 EDN and WiFi 802.11b/g, offering "unprecedented flexibility" for users to choose their portable devices including mobile phones, digital movie cameras, home media servers and automobiles.
According to Seagate, the DAVE will create new revenue streams for vendors.
"The DAVE platform will appeal to telcos who may choose to leverage it to monetise high-speed networks, and to OEMs who may choose to customise the DAVE technology to create a branded product suited to their channels," said the company.
"For the automotive industry, DAVE technology represents an opportunity to offer consumers a full range of digital content in their car now, rather than waiting for integrated digital offerings to become widely available in automobiles. Since D.A.V.E. technology is an open platform it enables developers to create new applications and content that take advantage of the larger capacity."
According to a report from MultiMedia Intelligence in the US, worldwide shipments of multimedia feature-rich mobile phones continues to grow, leaving consumers with the problem of storing all their content on an easy-to-access storage drive external to their mobile device.
According to the report, possible revenue streams for such handsets in 2008 is more than $76 billion worldwide, exceeding 300 million units.
