The majority of Australians believe that their home software Internet filters are not effective in blocking child pornography, according to a new survey. The data, commissioned by child welfare advocacy group Child Wise and collated by ACNielsen, found that 64 percent of respondents believe that their filters are not up to the task.

The survey also found that 83 percent of Australians believe that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should be responsible for blocking child porn at the server level.

Other findings of the ACNielsen survey include:

  • 78 percent of respondents think ISPs should offer the option to block child porn

  • 76 percent would change ISPs if another offered the option to block this content

  • 62 percent of Australians think the government should be responsible for blocking access to sites that contain underage pornographic material.
