Corel reckons it has an alternative to Microsoft Outlook that is good enough to entice users to ante up $129 for the software.
Taking a new slant on email clients, Corel’s WordPerfect MAIL has built in search capabilities and is engineered with the consumer and small business desktops in mind. Offering POP3 and IMAP support, the application is not designed to link in with an in-house mail server in the way that Outlook connects to Exchange.
Bundled along with the app is a range of features users would normally have to look elsewhere for. In addition to the calendaring function, contact management and the search we mentioned above, WordPerfect Mail also allows users to manage RSS feeds from within the same application as their email and calendar. It also has its own built-in Spam Protection based on the anti-spam application SA Proxy Pro which uses a five-point protection system to block spam, learning from stored email to filter incoming emails and scanning incoming email to minimise the amount of spam reaching users’ inboxes.
The email application is based on the technology that powered the Bloomba email program from Stata Labs which is now owned by Yahoo! and can import email, folders and contacts from other leading email programs such as Microsoft Outlook and Eudora.
“The addition of WordPerfect MAIL to the Corel product family supports WordPerfect Office’s position as the only truly viable alternative to Microsoft Office,” said Richard Carriere, general manager for Office Productivity at Corel. “With the addition of a world-class email client, Corel is advancing its commitment to consumers and small businesses. No other office suite vendor offers value-priced products for consumers and small businesses that are as comprehensive and easy to use as those offered by Corel.”
