In the first 3 months of 2008, HP shipped a total of 6.46 million notebooks worldwide as opposed  to Dells 4.683 million units.

DisplaySearch says Dell currently holds 15.1 per cent of the worldwide notebook market and the number two ranking by Dell is thanks to “a refocus by the company on retail sales and a special focus on growing business in China”.

Apple has moved from number eight worldwide to number 7 on the list, shipping 1.433 million notebooks globally for a 61 per cent gain year-over-year.

Even with a 61 per cent gain year-over-year Apple isn’t the company on the list with the largest year-over-year growth, says DisplaySearch. ASUS currently holds the number eight spot on the list and moved 1.330 million notebooks in Q1 2008 compares to 796,000 notebooks in Q1 2007 for a gain of 67 per cent.

DisplaySearch says that while Sony is making big gains in the U.S. market with its notebooks with more than a 40 per cent year-over-year growth in America, its global shipments declined, posting a total of 1.321 million units globally in Q1 2008 compared to 1.281 million in Q1 2007 for a modest 3 per cent year-over-year growth.

The DisplaySearch list ranks manufacturers in the following order based on number of global units shipped: HP, Dell, Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo, Fujitsu-Siemens, Apple, ASUS and Sony.
