Schmidt’s assessment of Jobs’ CEO ability stems not only from the fierce competition between Google and Apple, but from a first person account when Schmidt was a former Apple board member.

“Steve Jobs gave the best performance by a CEO in 50 years, maybe 100 years. He not only built Apple once, but twice” Schmidt said in an interview with Salesforce CEO Mar Benioff.

Steve Jobs co-founded Apple at the age of 21 and was kicked out by board members in 1985. 12 years later when he returned to the company, it was 90 days away from bankruptcy running US$1.86 billion in losses in two years.

Since his return, Jobs introduced the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, and his greatest legacies, the iTunes music store and the Apple App store. Through his vision and innovations, Apple became the most valuable company in the world according to market valuation.

In his letter of recognition, Jobs claimed he no longer felt he was capable of performing his CEO duties, and requested to be a part of Apple’s board of directors.
