After many smartphone mistakes, Sony Ericsson is beginning to show market leading form, being one of the first carriers to announce the new Android Ice Cream Sandwich update for its new phones, and most impressively, the majority of its existing Xperia range.

Over the past two years, Sony Ericsson has been trying to recover from its ill mobile phone efforts. One of the early adopters of Google’s Android, and the first in the Australian market to power a phone with a gigahertz processor (X10), the company foiled by overly customising the Android OS, resulting in phones that lagged and were reactive to software updates.

But in the past year, the company has recognised it’s made many mistakes and has since eliminated some of its redundant proprietary software, while also keeping future Android updates in mind.

Today, even the company’s Genesis smartphone, its Xperia X10, runs Android 2.3, with the 2.3.4 updates promised for its 2011 Xperia range.

But now, Sony Ericsson is really hitting its stride, promising the largely revamped 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its existing 2011 Xperia range.

Ice Cream Sandwich will be the first Android OS that infuses tablet and smartphone software into one system, bridging the gap between smartphones and tablets.

According to GsmArena, the update is said to include various NFC options, a virtual camera operator, USB hub support and some fundamental software advancements found in Android’s Honeycomb.

Ice Cream Sandwich is said to be released in October/November, with the Xperia updates rumoured to be coming early 2012.
