An AJAX Online Word Processor launched last week has created more than half a million documents online in just six days of operation.

When ajaxWrite, launched last week, the novel Internet-based application promised a six second load time, but unprecedented demand overloaded the system’s servers and pushed the load out to more than a minute on the first day. However, throwing some more hardware at the problem bought about a quick resolution. Today down speed is a quite respectable 10 seconds.

Once loaded the word processor looks and operates like a traditional desktop application and even allows you to open and edit Microsoft Word documents up to 3MB in size. The system allows users to save documents in MS Word, OpenDocument, Acrobat and RTF or text formats.

The system still has a few bugs in it, but as the developer points out, the huge advantage is that fixes are deployed immediately for all users.

Flushed with success, the developer has now made ajaxSketch available and plans to launch a new product on Wednesday of each week.

The latest offering is an object-oriented drawing program suitable for creating flow charts, org charts, simple diagrams and maps which works in the SVG open standard graphic format.

While the developer admits the 400K download doesn’t yet compare to more mature drawing programs, “it does provide basic object design and text tools and serves as a quick way to examine and edit existing SVG documents”.

Both applications require the user to use the Firefox browser with Java scripting.
