Universal McCann are facing a massive account loss after Intel has placed its media-buying account under review.
Interpublic Group which owns Universal McCann, the global incumbent on the media account, is defending, but it wasn’t clear at press time which other media shops will compete for the business.
The tech giant spent $98.2 million in 2006 and $54.2 million through September 2007.
A spokeswoman for Universal McCann referred calls to the client.
Universal McCann won the Intel business as a part of a holding company review in 2005. McCann WorldGroup beat out rivals DDB Worldwide and incumbent Havas for the then $300 global advertising and media account.
According to executives familiar with the matter, Intel has been unhappy with Interpublic’s team and a review of the creative account, currently handed by McCann Erickson, is likely to follow the media review.
In Australia, McCann also handles the Microsoft account, however insiders are saying this could also come under pressure as Microsoft goes after Apple and Google in the consumer market.
