And it seems they are outstripping their original model as tab hype reaches fever pitch.

And having witnessed seen the mobs descending on the Apple store in Sydney just two weeks ago, this is no surprise.

According to a “conservative estimate”, the iPad maker will take delivery of 4 to 4.3 million units a month, which could push total sales to a staggering 12m for the first quarter period.

However, this is provided demand momentum stays strong. And there are other obstacles in the way.

The shortage of components arising from the earthquake stricken Japan could hit supply as this is where Flash memory used in the tablet is manufactured.

This 12m figure, if realised, pales in comparison to the iPad’s figures, which sold 14.8 million globally since April.

In Australia last week, the iPad 2 was selling out in its Sydney store even before it opened its doors in the morning and hard core fans were still queuing days after its March 25th launch, an Apple store employee told SmartHouse.

Analysts also believe the iPad 2 sold between 500,000 and 600,000 the first weekend it went on sale to the rest of the world in February last – more than it sold of the first iPad .

The second and much hyped iPad installation promised to be “lighter, thinner, faster” although some within the industry expressed disappointment and debatrf if any major difference exists between it and the original.
