Computer giants said to be in ‘late stages’ of NEC buyout. The world’s fourth largest computer maker is said to be in talks to buy a majority share in struggling electronic giant, NEC Personal Products division, according to Japan’s Nikkei newspaper.

The dealmakers will be looking to gain synergy and economies of scale in product development, manufacture and materials costs, although NEC computers would continue to be produced, the report states.

The acquisition, if approved, could significantly increase Chinese-owned Lenovo’s leverage against the likes of rivals Acer and HP in the personal computer market.

Japanese-owned NEC controlled about 18 percent of their domestic computer market in 2009, although just 1 percent globally.
