An LG Electronics laptop owned by a journalist in Seoul has exploded, resulting in reclining trading for the company and its affiliate, LG Chem Ltd, according to a South Korean news website. The journalist noticed smoke emanating from the notebook computer when visiting a Seoul hospital, following which the laptop exploded when the owner took it to the roof of the building, said Yonhap Infomax.

A spokesperson for LG Chem, which produced the exploding battery, couldn’t provide further details when contacted yesterday by Bloomberg.com.

According to the publication, LG Electronics shares “tumbled” 7.5 percent, which is the largest fall in more than three years, to 97,100 won yesterday in Seoul. LG Chem declined 6.4 percent to 79,200 won.

An LG Electronics spokesperson said the stock market reaction was overblown because the company’s laptop business is “very small”.
