Mobile Hard Drive For Notebooks

Western Digital has commenced shipping a 160GB mobile hard drive for notebooks and portable storage.

The WD Scorpio is a 2.5-inch Serial ATA that uses perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to achieve high storage capacity in a small amount of space.

With PMR, the magnetisation of each data bit is aligned vertically to the spinning disk, rather than horizontally, which allows from more data on a given disk and provides a platform for future expansion of hard drive density.

The Scorpio also features special technology to make it run quietly and additional shock protection.
