Co-developed in NEC Australia’s R&D centre in Melbourne with a local development partner HiTech Telecom, the NEC mobile client allows connectivity not just via Wi-Fi, but also mobile data networks.

The application is designed to increase the connectivity for workers, allowing them to be contacted via a single number without expensive call forwarding costs.

“The whole process is extremely simple; the iPhone client enables a call to simultaneously ring a user’s landline and iPhone,” says Keith Anderson, NEC Australia Data and Mobility Manager. “Regardless of which phone is used to take the call, the costs normally charged with call forwarding will not be incurred and we’re giving freedom to the user to stay connected from anywhere anytime.”.

In addition to standard features such as email synchronisation and visual voicemail, NEC will be offering customised development services providing access to business applications on the mobile device.

In addition to the iPhone, NEC Australia has also been developing similar technology for BlackBerry, Nokia and Windows Mobile smartphones with in-built SIP functionality and also plans to develop the application for the much anticipated Google Android phone once available in the Australian market.

The application will be available for general release in the first quarter of 2009.
