A new iPad 2, which is due to be launched this week is set to go on sale immediately for around $599 according to a carrier source in Australia. However the first stock is tipped to be only available via Apple stores.

Apple, who are concerned that their 90% share of the tablet market could be dented by new Android devices from the likes of Samsung and Motorola which are due to be launched in Australia next month is reportedly coordinating several divisions including Australia to start selling the new device immediately.

Apple Insiders’ contacts believed that “at least one version” of the new iPad could be shipping that week, even as Apple executives stood on stage.

Electonista said that the immediacy would be a stark contrast with the original iPads over two-month interval and Apple’s typical practices for iPhone launches, which often take place two to three weeks after the announcement. It may have a much quicker turnaround simply because of the iPad’s independence from carriers. Unlike an iPhone, which needs to be coordinated with local networks and their own retailers, an iPad just has to be shipped directly in Wi-Fi form.

The new Ipad will have a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 512MB of faster RAM, front and back cameras and a slimmer, lighter build. Most now don’t expect an SD card slot or Mini DisplayPort, but outside rumors have raised the possibility of a carbon fiber shell that would make it much lighter than any other similarly sized tablet.

The first model on sale in Australia is tipped to be a $599 Wi Fi model.
