Symantec has launched a multi-function network security appliance that is designed to protect against what Symantec has labelled blended threats.

Based on Symantec’s third generation security platform the Gateway Security 5600 Series is available in 3 models with scalable throughput, built-in hardware redundancy and integrated load balancing.

The hardware Series has seven security functions including anti-spam, antivirus, clientless SSL and IPSec VPN, full-inspection firewall, intrusion prevention, intrusion detection, and both dynamic document review and URL list-based content filtering technologies to provide zero-day protection for the network. “As Internet threats continue to exploit multiple attack vectors, Symantec is positioned to help customers solve their security problems by offering proactive integrated solutions based on layered security technologies, providing the protection needed today,” said Greg Gotta, vice president, product delivery, Symantec.  The system also comes with clientless virtual private network (VPN) connections based on secure socket layer (SSL) communications.  By eliminating the need to install client software on mobile machines, the cost to implement and maintain remote secured connectivity is reduced.  Symantec Gateway Security 5600 Series offers customers both SSL and traditional IPSec VPN capabilities, allowing customers to mix SSL and IPSec sessions under one license.

Symantec has extended support for URL-based list filters with Symantec’s patented Dynamic Document Review (DDR) technology.  DDR prevents employees from accessing objectionable content by allowing administrators to define context sensitive word relationships.
