The One Laptop Per Child Program, seeks to provide hundreds of thousand of schoolchildren in remote communities of Australia with an XO laptop loaded with educational software.

The main beneficiaries are regional and remote communities in Western Australia and Northern Territory and the program is sponsored by Telstra and CBA.

The additional funding was announced as part of Treasurer Wayne Swan’s Budget 2012, unveiled yesterday.

Labor has also pledged to set up a national online assessment and learning bank for students, parents and teachers which would provide a “sophisticated diagnostic assessment of each student’s learning needs.”

But, that is, provided they are re-elected.
