The Attorney-General’s Department plan to force ISPs to maintain records of emails and telephone calls made by their customers is being opposed by the Privacy Commission.Under the plans, ISPs would have to make the records available for criminal investigations.

The Department has been talking with the Internet industry over the past six months on the proposal, which has been highly criticised by privacy advocates but has police departments saying access to such information is crucial.

Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim told a Senate committee hearing there is a danger the plan could lead to people’s private information being mishandled and his office would not support the plan.
