Project MoonShot: Reducing Server Complexity, Energy Use & Costs
0Overall Score

Hewlett-Packard has confirmed plans to launch a new “microserver” platform using low-cost, low-power Intel Atom processors.

The platform has been quietly developed in an initiative H-P has called Project Moonshot. It aims to help datacentre customers “significantly reduce server complexity, energy use and costs,” H-P says.

Microservers use many small chips more commonly found in low-cost notebooks and tablets instead of more powerful purpose-built server processors.

The first microserver system H-P has built, code named Gemini, uses Atom chips codenamed Centerton, packed into “server cartridges”. The computer company says it found that “using many extreme low-energy servers densely packed into a small footprint can be much more efficient than fewer standalone servers.”
