0Overall Score

Make calling a reality. Skype’s newest purchase has brought live video calls to the iPhone.

The newly launched Video Connect enables live video calling, but also has a cool feature allowing iPhone users to send video messages to their nearest and dearest.

They can even post a live video link to Facebook and Twitter and Qik also has a social video feed which sends alerts when new videos are posted.

There are two versions of the application available- Qik Video Connect or Video Connect Plus, which costs $3.99.

Both the Qik Video Connect and Connect Plus apps enable live video chat

over 3G or WiFi between iPhones, iPod Touches with built-in cameras.

The Plus version offer “real-time effects”, which allows customisation of video chat and also provides additional video editing tools and HD quality.

The video service is already available on devices running on Android, Symbian, BlackBerry OS and Windows Mobile.

“In a world of fast and readily available 3G and WiFi connections, video allows you to transcend the current world of text and photo messages to share special and everyday moments in a more meaningful way,” said Rick Osterloh, Skype’s head of consumer products.

“Qik Video Connect makes the concept of ‘see what I see’ a full reality.”

Qik is integrated with your phone’s contact list so you can easily see when your friends and family are available for a live video chat.

However, its is only available for iPhone and 4th generation iPod Touch models with iOS 4 or later.

Internet calling giant, Skype, purchased California-based Qik earlier this year in a deal said to have been worth $100 million.
