Samsung has announced it is accelerating its plans to standardise on 40″ and 46″ LCD panels as a result of its move to the larger format 7G LCD panels.

The company will this week begin installing equipment at the new production line that will manufacture the glass substrates. The production line will replicate one its share at its joint S-LCD facility with Sony.
The line is capable of producing eight 40 inch panels or six 46 inch panels at once and is expected to begin production in April next year at a cost of around US$1 Billion. At full capacity the production line will output an amazing 45,000 sheets per month.
Combined with the output from the 1870 x 2200 mm sized substrate on the Samsung/Sony S-LCD (7-1) Line Samsung will hope to be in a strong position to aggressively target the consumer TV segment.
So much so that the move is a first step toward what could be an industry standardisation on the 40 and 46 inch HD format.
