Telstra’s network has remained operational in Japan, although some cables were damaged.

Telstra International has said it has restored cable connections since Tuesday, despite the destruction wreaked in Japan and confirmed it had experienced “some infrastructure and service disruption” following the tsunami and earthquake which shattered the region north east of Tokyo.

According to reports, the telco switched to unaffected cables.

The Australia-Japan link as well as the Reach North Asia Loop were uninterrupted by the crisis, it has been confirmed, although other subsea cables were hit.

This could affect communications links to US and other major cities to which Japan acts as a global hub.

Korea Telecom already confirmed some of its cables connecting Japan and the US were hit as were other carriers including Pacific Crossing and StarHub.

Telstra are not as of yet evacuating employees from its Tokyo offices, but confirmed it is “working closely with the local management team to monitor the situation and we will continue to support our employees throughout this extremely difficult time,” it said.
