Trend Micro has stolen Symantec’s thunder and now claims the top spot in retail and enterprise sales.

Trend Micro Australia and New Zealand, secured the number one spot in enterprise sales according to the IDC Asia Pacific Security Software Tracker 1H2005, taking the title from last years best sellers Symantec. The traditionally enterprise focused security software provider again taking the number one spot in retail sales from Symantec, according to GFK retail sales snapshot.

Trend Micro has largely been known for its enterprise products, however in the past couple of years the company has began focusing on providing solutions for the home.

According to Trend Micro’s Consumer Director, George Farah, society is spending more and more time online, be it for work or play and as a consequence consumers encounter all kinds of net nasties – viruses, spy ware, Phishing attacks, etc.

“We see it as our mission to create a safe world for the exchange of digital information, an environment where consumers can safely pay their bills, purchase Christmas presents, help their children with their homework, etc. We seek to achieve this mission by providing an easy to use, “all in one” security suite – PC-cillin Internet Security. I would like to thank all our loyal customers and resellers and also our distribution partner, Manaccom, for helping to make PC-cillin Internet Security the leading consumer internet security product in Australian retail,” he said.

Farah believes Trend’s ability to work closely with retailers has helped them establish better products.

“Obviously our products have been in the past focused on the enterprise. However the times are changing and we believe Trend Micro with the strong Norton brand can provide solutions to keep PCs in homes safe. What makes us different from the other security software providers like Symantec is our free telephone support. We also have products that are simple to use and offer a high level of support,” said Farah.

He also feels bundling Trend’s software products is much better than having a lot of separate stand alone products.

“Stand alone products are riskier and resource intensive. Bundled products will with blended threats. For example you need your email virus to work with your phishing email,” he said.

With the companies traditional enterprise product sales, according to the IDC Tracker, Trend Micro had the highest revenue share of the Secure Content Management software market in the large business segment (companies with 500+ employees).

According to Trend Micro Australia, Enterprise Director, Damian Thompson the company’s success has been a combination of factors.

“IDC’s tracker is based on sales and toil revenue spent on secure content management.
