Trend Micro has announced advances in its gateway messaging security offerings that are designed to confront growing security problems, such as spam-enabled phishing attacks, and provide greater support for messaging compliance. It is not known when the service will be available in Australia.

The solution consists of three integrated components: an enhanced version of InterScan Messaging Security Suite (IMSS); Trend Micro Spam Prevention Solution (SPS); and Trend Micro Network Reputation Services (NRS). “Since the part numbers, pricing, and other aspects remain unchanged, channel partners have nothing to do other than become familiar with the new features in order to represent them to their customers,” said Bob Hansmann, Trend Micro director of product marketing. “SPS has been enhanced to renew its strength as an anti-spam solution, particularly with the inclusion of two distinct anti-spam scanning technologies. Used in combination with Trend Micro’s Network Anti-spam Solution (NAS), a leading IP Filtering solution, Trend Micro customers can bring to bear the leading anti-spam technologies in a true, multi-layered defense against spam.”

All three can be used together or as standalone offerings, and all are designed to be easy and flexible for businesses to integrate with existing security systems. The IMSS and SPS products in the channel have been automatically updated. The updated information is available on the Trend Micro Web site, as well as PartnerWeb, an Internet portal exclusively for Trend Micro partners.

Content security is not new, and at a concept level, there are others who offer content based anti-spam scanning with IP filtering technology. “But no one has the breadth or depth in research and experience that Trend Micro offers in support of these solutions,” said Hansmann. “The multiple anti-spam engine option within SPS is probably the most ‘cool’ and effective of the new capabilities. Since similar techniques have been used in the fight against viruses, perhaps ‘Innovative’ is more accurate. But ‘effective’ is what we are really talking about.”

According to research by Trend Micro, phishing is jeopardizing both personal and corporate information at an alarming rate. Resellers can demonstrate the benefits customers will receive by deploying the new solutions. “From the start… Less spam. Beyond that, more control over email that, while not technically ‘spam’, may be something that the customer is concerned about,” said Hansmann. “For example, if there is a new product in development, code named “Godzilla”, then outbound email could be filtered to prevent anyone from sending out information that has the word “Company Confidential” and “Godzilla” in it, unless the sender is one of a handful of authorized executives. There are many other applications for the content filtering power of these solutions.”.
