Vodafone is set to make a $AUD41 billion takeover offer for MTN Group, Africa’s largest mobile-phone company, according to South African sources.

Vodafone, the world’s largest mobile-phone company, is reportedly examining options to buy Johannesburg- based MTN.

The MTN Group is a fast-growing Johannesburg-based telco that has some 61.5 million subscribers across 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East- an increase from about 40 million subscribers in 2006.

For its part, Vodafone had 252 million customers as at the end of 2007, with any successful merger with MTN giving the company a total global subscriber base of almost 315 million customers.
