Microsoft who has failed dismally when it comes to understanding the needs of the consumer and Smartphone markets, is now set to go is set to get “hammered” in the operating system market, as consumers and business in the millions dump the Companies tired old Windows operating system in favour of the new Google Chrome OS running on notebooks and netbooks, say analysts.

Communications analyst Steve Sechrist predicts that the free Chrome OS will displace Microsoft’s Windows OS on netbooks according to a story on the Inquirer in the UK.

This implies that Microsoft will be forced to give away its flagship desktop operating system for free in order to support sales of its other products, like Office.

During the past 18 months Microsoft has seen business stripped away because of poor decision making. Their Smartphone business which once commanded over 80% of the global market is now down to less than 4% with the Company offering only 5,000 apps for the new Windows Phone 7 OS Verses 200,000 apps for Android devices and over 300,000 apps for Apple devices.

In the browser market Microsoft has seen their share fall from over 86% to less than 45% as Apple with Safari, Google with their Chrome offering and Firefox strip share away from Microsoft.

Sechrist said that Google’s Chrome OS is not just a stand-alone netbook OS but a piece in a large ecosystem puzzle that is looking to topple Apple and Microsoft.

He claimed that Google’s stripped down operating system will make money because it is not burdened with legacy drivers and resource draining middleware code.

Sechrist’s first impressions of the Chromebook were glowing. He said that Google has finally delivered on the long promised “Instant-on” feature that has eluded Bill Gates and his army of engineers for decades.

The Inquirer said that the Google plan is not just hitting the OS side of Microsoft business model, but the lucrative office suite business as well, Sechrist claims. Chromebooks will come empowered with video capabilities and online office-like functions too, using the collaborative-based Google Docs.
