<p><span lang="en-GB">CANBERRA: It’s a bit over 14 months away, but the Australian Bureau of Statistics is spreading the word ahead of Australia’s next census.</span></p>
</div>

<p><span lang="en-GB">The census, which will be held on August 10, 2021 – a Tuesday, incidentally – will be the first since August 2016. It will measure the number of people in Australia and what Stats says are their key characteristics.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">The 2016 census was something of a disaster for the Government, with the event overwhelmed by denial-of-service attacks and software failures. </span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">That saw the census-day service shut down and brought back a day later. Presumably the attackers may try again this year, but should face a better-prepared operation.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">There will be a number of other changes from the 2016 shemozzle. For instance, there will be new questions on health conditions, and the Australian Defence Force will attend. </span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">Unlike 2016, questions on Internet access in households will not be asked, given the increased mobile Internet usage on personal devices outside the home, Stats adds.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">Other changes will allow the census to collect data on long-term health conditions, such as arthritis and diabetes. </span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">And information about Australian Defence Service veterans will hopefully provide a better understanding of the circumstances of Australia’s veteran community.</span></p>

<p><span lang="en-GB">LONDON: The UK Government is planning new measures to restrict foreign takeovers of high-tech industries on national security grounds.</span></p>

<p><span lang="en-GB">Security experts have cautioned the UK Government that it has been late to address the issue.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">This comes amid growing concern about the risk of China buying high-tech companies, especially in the economic turmoil resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">The alarm was raised by the acquisition of British chip design outfit Imagination Technologies, whose tech is used in iPhones.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">The company was bought by Canyon Bridge Partners, a private equity outfit based in the Cayman Islands.  But 99 percent of the funds for the purchase came from China Reform, a state-backed Chinese company.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">Analysts say the Imagination acquisition was just part of an incremental process where technology has been moved out of the UK and towards China</span></p>

<p><span lang="en-GB">SYDNEY: The CSIRO and Microsoft Australia have formed a partnership to jointly use AI and machine learning to counter illegal fishing and plastic waste and to boost Australian farming.</span></p>

<p><span lang="en-GB">They will analyse information gathered from high-resolution cameras and underwater microphones to assist with fishing management in Australian marine reserves like the Great Barrier Reef, and with detection of fishing via use of explosives in Indonesia. </span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span lang="en-GB">To counter the problem of marine debris they will analyse videos of rivers and stormwater drains to identify and track garbage flows into waterways and inform intervention efforts. These include the placement of river rubbish traps and reverse vending machines where the public can recycle bottles and cans in return for a fee. </span></p>

<p><span lang="en-GB">Farmers will be provided with custom, digital insights from a range of data sources, including sensors and satellites, to provide insights on tactical and strategic decision-making, including soil condition, crop growth and farm management. – Stuart Corner</span></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the largest annual trade events on the ICT and IoT industry, COMPUTEX 2020 has been cancelled, with event organisers postponing the trade fair until 2021.</p>
<p>COMPUTEX organisers Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and Taipei Computer Association (TCA) cited the ongoing COVID-19 crisis as the cause for the cancellation.</p>
<p>Previously, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers had pushed COMPUTEX back to 28<sup>th</sup>-30<sup>th</sup> September 2020, from early June 2020. The next COMPUTEX fair is now scheduled to take place on 1<sup>st</sup>-5<sup>th</sup> June 2021 in Taipei.</p>
<p>Last year COMPUTEX hosted 1,685 exhibitors and attracted 42,495 attendees from 171 countries.</p>
<p>In the meantime, TAITRA has launched a series of online events, including #COMPUTEX Online Talks, where key executives from Intel, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Supermicro, Deltra Electronics and more shared tech trends on AI and 5G (the livestream was watched by more than 400,000).</p>

<p>On 29<sup>th</sup> June Taiwan Trade Show’s YouTube channel will host #InnoVEXOnlineDemo, where start-ups will showcase their new products and technologies. In September organises will launch the COMPUTEX Online 2D Exhibition, which will display exhibitors’ products and services online.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the 2020 China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) will be hosted online only, from today until the 24<sup>th</sup> June. As part of its virtual event, Canton Fair is running 24-hour livestreams of 1,779 exhibitors.</p>

<p><span lang="en-GB"> </span>A cafe in Daejeon is trying out robot baristas.</p>
<p><span lang="en-GB"> </span>Lee Dong-bae, director at Vision Semicon, says robots could help people observe social distancing in public.</p>
<p><span lang="en-GB"> </span>Vision Semicon is a smart-factory solution provider which developed the barista robot, together with a state-run science institute.</p>
<p><span lang="en-GB">Lee said the system needs no input from people from order to delivery, and tables are sparsely arranged to ensure smooth movements of the robots.</span></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Lenovo has unveiled its new ThinkPad E14 and E15 laptops, which offer up to AMD Ryzen 7 4700U processors with Radeon Graphics, stating that they will become available from June 2020 starting at US$639.</p>
<p>The ThinkPad E14 and E15 models offer consumers an updated design, with a screen-to-body ratio of 85%. In addition, they add a range of the latest security features, such as a tough fingerprint reader and an optional IR camera with Glance by Mirametrix technology. The Glance feature can automatically lock the laptop when the user steps away and offers a snap window and smart pointer function for multi-display set-ups.</p>

<p>Both laptops are equipped with Harman speakers with Dolby Audio software, dual array far-field microphones and the ThinkPad keyboard. Consumers can choose to add Wi-Fi 6 technology to their laptops for optimal connectivity.</p>
<p>“We are delighted to partner with AMD and leverage their ground-breaking 7nm process technology within our ThinkPad laptops, and to offer our customers class-leading computing solutions that will help ensure business continuity during and beyond these challenging times,” said Jerry Paradise, Vice-President of the Commercial Portfolio of Lenovo PC &amp; Smart Devices.</p>
<p>Lenovo has also announced that its new ThinkPad T, X and L series powered by AMD Ryzen PRO 4000 Series mobile processors will be made available in June 2020.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Struggling sound Company Sonos has jumped into the soundbar market in an effort to prop up sales of their networked sound offering with an expensive new TV audio offering.</p>
<p>Earlier this year the Company was trying to nobble existing customers systems in an effort to generate new sales.</p>
<p>Their latest offering which is set sell for around $1,399 in Australia finally supports Dolby Atmos which has been a key feature of competitors soundbars for the past 18 months.In comparison Aldi recently sold a Dolby Atmos sound bar for $299.</p>
<p>Called the Arc soundbar is a long, thin, speaker with rounded edges that can be placed below TVs. It fires sound in multiple directions, resulting in a three-dimensional effect.</p>
<p>The Arc replaces the Playbase and Playbar, the company’s older soundbar models, the Company has also said that it will release a new app and operating system for its speakers in June.[wpdevart_youtube]Yu1NiZUbukA[/wpdevart_youtube]</p>
<p>The problem with buying a Sonos product is that also have to contend with the 16bit proprietary Sonos operating system which is constantly having to be upgraded.</p>
<p>Several competitors now use Google Voice and Alexa from Amazon without the need for a proprietary OS, they include soundbar brands such as LG, Samsung, Philips, and Polk.</p>
<p>The Companies poor selling Playbase speaker, designed to fit underneath some TVs, is also being discontinued as of today. <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-153047 aligncenter" src="https://www.channelnews.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Sonos-Soundbar.jpg" alt="" width="1000" height="562" /></p>
<p>Significantly more expensive than the $995 Playbar, Sonos said that the new device will be released on June 10th and will only work with the new Sonos S2 app which will work on iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac.</p>
<p>The Arc, third-generation Sub, and Sonos Five are the first products built on the company’s S2 platform which they had to develop due to complaints from existing owners of Sonos sound systems and the fact it only allowed for 16bit playback Vs 24 bit playback of audio.</p>
<p>The new Arc will be available in either black or white, and it features an elongated, matte plastic design with 76,000 holes drilled into the casing.</p>
<p>Inside that outer shell are 11 drivers that fire audio all around your room to create immersive, multidirectional sound.<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-153045" src="https://www.channelnews.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Sonos-ARC-Gif.gif" alt="" width="800" height="461" /></p>
<p>As with most soundbars, the centre channel focuses on dialogue clarity while the left and right channels, along with the surround and up-firing height speakers, increase the sense of spaciousness and immersion that comes out of the Arc.</p>
<p>Like most of their competitors the ARC can play PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos audio. DTS and multichannel PCM audio are not supported.<br />
It automatically optimizes what the drivers are doing in each scenario, several cheaper brands such as the $799 Polk system does this.</p>
<p>TV Owners will need a new generation TV with an eARC HDMI port or a 4K Blu-ray player — to take full advantage of the lossless Atmos playback that the Arc is capable of.</p>
<p>The bottom line is this is simply a soundbar that is coming late to market with a lot of features found in other soundbars. The combination of an expensive $1000+ Sonos sub and ARC soundbar makes it a very expensive TV sound system.</p>
<p>For me, the Sennheiser Ambeo is the premium soundbar to go for.</p>
