Dont Write Us Off Nokia, Warns Blackberry

It’s a case of people in glasses houses can’t throw stones. While Nokia ships sinks and platform burns it has annoyed another rival with its catty remarks at the World Mobile Congress taking place in Barcelona this week.

“I don’t know how you can say that we are not in the race,” said RIM CEO Mr Jim Balsillie, the makers of Blackberry, told  the BBC at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

This followed remarks by Nokia CEO Stephen Elsop that the Smartphone race was now a three key players – Apple, Android and Windows 7- leaving the makers of Blackberry out of the equation.

But it appears Nokia haven’t done their sums properly as on last count Research In Motion held a respectable number three spot in the top Smartphone makers in the world, topped by Apple and the aforementioned Nokia.

They are also the number one phone in the UK and grew 70 percent last year, said its CEO.

And the Canadian based brand has more goodies on the way to put the fires up its competitors – in the form of tablets – announcing its Playbook tab last September, which is to be launched later this year  as well as looking to a younger demographic for growth.

2011 as a year of transition for Blackberry as it moves away from its traditional business roots, say analysts.

“The biggest transition for us is that we are coming out with tablets,” Balsillie declared.

A slightly deluded Nokia have their own major issues to worry about and clearly think the new deal they have done with Windows this week will allow them break into the top end Smartphone market, which they have failed to hold a firm grasp of.

“Are people writing us off? We have had huge growth in the last year. I wouldn’t write us off,” he said.
