At an event overnight in New York Microsoft’s chief executive Steve Ballmer attempted to rev up the same hype associated with an iPhone launch.
He said the new operating system would be available on nine handsets next month from a variety of hardware manufacturers. Missing from the line-up was Motorola who after telling Microsoft that they would not support the new platform found themselves being sued by Microsoft for alleged patent infringement on their range of Google Android phones.
The new Microsoft range which has features similar to what is already on offer from Apple with their iPhone and Google Android offerings allow users to customise their devices claims Ballmer.
“We focused in on how real people really want to use their phones when they are on the go,” he said, adding that the ability to customise the phone was what he thought distinguishes his company’s product from others.

The New York Times who relegated the story to the technology pages as opposed to the front page where most Apple iPhone launches are reported said Microsoft has a lot at stake with the new phone software. Over the last several years, the smartphone market has grown exponentially. The Apple iPhone, Google Android and RIM’s Blackberry have taken the lead in customer sales.
Microsoft, which does not have a quality competing smartphone, has lagged behind.
In Australia Telstra is expected to announce the availability of BigPond Movie and Music content on the new phones.
