A report released yesterday targeted Toshiba and Apple Computer as companies consumers should boycott in order to force them to adopt more environmentally friendly procedures for personal computer recycling. The report praised Dell and HP for their willingness to take back old computers and deal with them.

But Toshiba claims the report entitled “Computer Waste in Australia and the Case for Producer Responsibility” makes seriously misleading claims and misrepresents Toshiba’s activities. The company says that apart from the fact the organisation gave Toshiba only two days to respond, the reports methodology is fundamentally flawed.

Toshiba ISD General Manager Mark Whittard, said he was unable to comment beyond the contents of a prepared statement sent to media as the organisation’s solicitors are awaiting a response from Environment Victoria.

The press statement says Toshiba has demanded a public retraction of Environment Victoria’s call for a consumer boycott of Toshiba’s computer products, saying the “research is flawed and its conclusions are founded upon incorrect and incomplete information”.
Environment Victoria’s Report provides a completely inadequate basis upon which to call for a consumer boycott, says the statement.

“Our records show that we were given less than a couple of business days to respond to Environment Victoria’s request for information before it published its report.  Given notice and a reasonable opportunity to respond, we would have provided our Environmental Management policies, however as we were unable to provide information within this unreasonable timeframe, the study does not represent Toshiba ISD correctly,” said Mark Whittard, General Manager, Toshiba ISD Australia.

“The study’s methodology is flawed and we are determined to have Environment Victoria’s misrepresentations fully redressed.  Environment Victoria has demonstrated a lack of responsibility in the publication of this Report and its subsequent call to consumers to boycott our products,” he said.
