Demand for computers with the new Vista operating system installed has been stronger than expected, according to computer manufacturer Dell.

The company began taking orders for Vista select desktops and notebooks on Saturday, prior to the launch of the operating system on Tuesday.

Dell corporate communications manager Paul McKeon says that the company was surprised by the interest in the new OS.

“Because Dell sells direct, we’re among the first to see just how keen customers are about Windows Vista,” he says.

Dell is selling a number of models with different flavours of Vista pre-installed, including Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate and Business.
