]]>CANBERRA: It’s a bit over 14 months away, but the Australian Bureau of Statistics is spreading the word ahead of Australia’s next census.
The census, which will be held on August 10, 2021 – a Tuesday, incidentally – will be the first since August 2016. It will measure the number of people in Australia and what Stats says are their key characteristics.
The 2016 census was something of a disaster for the Government, with the event overwhelmed by denial-of-service attacks and software failures.
That saw the census-day service shut down and brought back a day later. Presumably the attackers may try again this year, but should face a better-prepared operation.
There will be a number of other changes from the 2016 shemozzle. For instance, there will be new questions on health conditions, and the Australian Defence Force will attend.
Unlike 2016, questions on Internet access in households will not be asked, given the increased mobile Internet usage on personal devices outside the home, Stats adds.
Other changes will allow the census to collect data on long-term health conditions, such as arthritis and diabetes.
And information about Australian Defence Service veterans will hopefully provide a better understanding of the circumstances of Australia’s veteran community.

The NBN co warns scammers are trying to mislead people by informing them their service will be disconnected should they not provide a ‘technician’ online access to their computer.
Security concerns have become heightened as more Australians work-from-home amid the COVID19 pandemic, many on company laptops/PCs.
It joins a variety of other phishing emails and online attempts.
“With scammers increasing their efforts to use COVID-19 to steal people’s personal or financial details, we are starting to see the emergence [of] nbn related COVID-19 scams, so we are working with agencies like Scamwatch to continue to monitor the situation and alert the community,” states NBN Co Chief Security Officer, Darren Kane.
“We want to remind everyone to never give an unsolicited caller remote access to your computer or devices via the installation of programs such as Team Viewer or share any financial information or personal details with someone they don’t know.”
Mr Kane has urged Australian businesses and staff to not get complacence with the security of their work devices and documents despite the complacency which can emerge from working-from-home.

“It is important to not click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails and never respond to unsolicited messages.,” Kane adds.
“This is even more important for all of us that are working from home, as scammers are on the hunt for ways to get access and disrupt home and corporate networks.”
The NBN Co is advising Australians to not leave their work laptop or devices unattended or in ‘unsecured areas’, and prevent family members from using them for personal use. The agency warns it runs the risk of work devices being accidentally inflected.
Australians are also being advised to heighten their home network security, and change the default administrators password on their home router.
Further information on how Australians can protect against online scammers during coronavirus is available on the NBN Co’s website here.

]]>What’s a critical investment for any home today is networking. It’s what delivers better and faster information to a mobile or tablet, superior picture quality to a TV while allowing multiple connections and faster streaming of content from the likes of Spotify, Apple Music or Google.
The tri-band D-Link Covr-2202 – which can provide consistent whole home wi-fi coverage, for example if you are investing in the new Foxtel 4K real time sport channel and the related 4K content you will need a new 4K TV.
But if you combine this with a new mesh network router such as the new D-Link Covr-2202 who will get the best of both worlds. 4K real time Foxtel sports content delivered over a fast Satellite feed and other networked content streamed to your TV.
The new Covr-2202 is a follow-up to the recently launched Covr-C1203 dual band wi-fi mesh system and is also a scalable solution which in the future will allow you to use the extenders from both D-Link devices to extend the Wi Fi reach in your home.
The latest Covr-2202 is comprised of two taller units which can deliver blanket wireless coverage to an entire home.
This new tri-band AC2200 system features a dedicated 5Ghz smart backhaul which means there are two bands connecting to devices in your home and the third band connecting back to the router and satellite units rather than crowding the other two bands and slowing you down.
The inclusion of Smart Steering technology automatically directs devices to the optimal wireless band while Smart Roaming connects users to the strongest signal as people connected to the D-Link network move around their home.
The Covr-2202 system also includes MU-MIMO (multiple user – multiple input multiple output) technology for an even faster and more efficient wireless network.
The two Covr units have six built in vertical and horizontal antennas that optimises the connectivity between points.
Also onboard are two Gigabit Ethernet ports to also provide high-speed wired connectivity.
The D-Link Covr-2202, which won a CES Innovation Honouree Award earlier this year, is available now and is priced at $499.95 ($NZ549).
The Covr-C1203 is priced at $399.99 ($NZ449).

]]>As per ITWorldCanada, BlackBerry Chief Technology Officer, Charles Eagan, confirms the companies are building a “BlackBerry Alexa” enterprise device, for release in Q1 next year.
BlackBerry CEO, John Chen, asserts voice control will become a focal point in both the consumer and enterprise world:
“We believe the world is going to come together with enterprise and consumer. These devices that sit in your home could become the front point of a workflow engine.”
The forthcoming ‘BlackBerry Alexa’ device will reportedly integrate some of BlackBerry’s security expertise – e.g. alerting administrators when connections change, or an unknown connection is detected.
“Some of this grown-up behaviour is needed as you bring consumer devices into the enterprise,” asserts Mr Eagan.
Some sources state the rumoured device will also include “multi-factor authentication”, though it’s unclear what exactly this entails.
As previously reported, in November last year Amazon announced its ‘Alexa for Business’ managed service arsenal, enabling businesses to streamline certain processes via voice controls.
Amazon is reportedly also amidst discussions with Cisco Systems and Polycom for a range of conference-room solutions – furthering its ‘Alexa’ hardware push into commercial environments.

]]>Finkel bases his claim on a report by Greentech Media, a US-based company that generates daily reports and market research on electricity systems and green technology.
The report estimates the combined power of batteries installed by Australia’s 1.8 million solar rooftop homes and businesses and grid batteries was 246 milliwatts (MW).
That compares with a total of about 200MW by each of the USA and Germany.
Given the falling price of batteries and the number of existing rooftop solar collectors – thought to be more than 1.8 million – Finkel believes many more homes will purchase batteries in coming years.
One consultancy has estimated that the number of residential battery installations in Australia is set to jump by nearly 60 percent, or 33,000, this year, lifting the installed base to about 61,000.
Installations are said to have tripled last year to 20,800.

]]>The new ‘Telstra Calling for Office 365’ is set to launch in mid-2018, and will be bundled into several MS Office programs, with the addition of Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams.
Just last week, Microsoft revealed 200,000 organisations are using ‘Teams’, up from 125,000 six months ago.
The product will enable Telstra to further expand into corporate and business segments, with many retiring PABX telephone systems.
The partnership is heralded the first of its kind between Microsoft and any global telco.
Telstra Executive Director of Global Products, Michelle Bendschneider, affirms the new service follows several years of relationship building between the telco and Microsoft.
The new calling service will be sold as a standalone offering, and Bendschneider claims it’s one of Telstra’s most significant product launches this year:
“Launching a product like this caters for, not just the large enterprises, but more importantly the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of Australian organisations that will need to re-plumb and rewire their communications and collaborations environment ahead of a number of things changing in the market like the NBN”.
Microsoft Australia COO, Rachel Bondi, claims Telstra’s new product reflects the close relationship between both companies:
“This is a unique offering in the Australian marketplace. We have Microsoft Office calling and hybrid solutions in other markets, but this is co-created for Microsoft and Telstra only in Australia”.

Introduced in 2015, its Lite version uses less data, is less than 1MB to install and is easily accessible across all networks. It was first introduced across countries in Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia.
It is available for download now on Android with iOS to follow. It is available in other countries including the USA, UK and New Zealand.
