Worldwide sales of notebook computers will soar 25 percent in 2010 to hit 209.5 million units, according to a survey by California-based research group iSuppli.

That compares with a 22 percent rise predicted in March by rival researcher IDC, which put the total of the portable PC sales in the year at 204.9 million.

ISuppli divides the notebook market into three segments: netbooks, CULV notebooks – ultra-thin models with low-power chips and bigger displays than netbooks – and regular notebooks.

It predicts the netbook market will total 34.5 million units in 2010, up 30 percent, and will reach 58 million sales by 2014.

The CULV segment is tipped to record 14.5 million sales this year, almost double the 7.5 million sales in 2009. But expansion of this category is likely to level out in coming years, iSuppli says.

The regular notebook market is forecast to reach 160.5 million units, up 21 percent, and will continue to control the biggest share of the notebook market at least through 2014.

Acer was the top maker worldwide in 2009 with 37 percent of the global action. It was followed by Asus, H-P, Samsung and Dell.
