Vodafone Credit Crunch Gives Customers Free Calls

Vodafone has been forced to give its customers free calls after its prepaid credit recharge system developed a fault yesterday.

Customers were unable to recharge using their phones, internet or in-store systems until around 11.50 am today, when Cormac Hodgkinson, Vodafone’s director of customer service and experience wrote on the company blog: “Our prepaid recharge system is back up. You should now be able to top up your service. An SMS will go out to people that tried to unsuccessfully recharge yesterday which will notify you that you can now recharge and have your credit applied to your account.”

Hodgkinson said that the fault the system had experienced was preventing in-store staff from manually applying prepaid recharge credit to customers’ accounts, leaving several customers unable to use their phone service or even access voice calls.

The free calls were offered until 1pm today.

The telco has been beset by problems over its service in recent months, but the  Australian Privacy Commissioner revealed this week that none of its customers records had been exposed on the Internet after it had been claimed that the billing and call records of up to four million customers were openly available online .
